Marine Debris Missions

What: Marine Debris Missions (MDMs) are group cleanup events consisting of removing marine debris at various beaches and reefs. Participants can choose to cleanup on the beach or snorkel, freedive, or *scuba dive for debris.

When: MDMs will take place 1-2 weekends per month.

Where: BOW anticipates regular MDMs at beaches across Oʻahu including MDMs on military bases like Marine Corps Base Hawaiʻi.

Who: All active duty military personnel, military veterans, and local community members are welcomed to attend BOW’s cleanups. MDMs will be limited to 20 participants per event.

Supplies: Volunteers will use reusable gloves, tongs, and bags to pick up marine debris, SEED's Buoyancy Separation Device to collect microplastics, or dive bags made from pet screen to collect underwater marine debris. All participants should bring a reusable water bottle and wear sunscreen to all BOW events.

*Operation Ghost Net*

What: Operation Ghost Net targets abandoned, lost, or derelict fishing gear (ALDFG) that has washed ashore and removes it from the beach. If there are no reported ghost nets washed ashore, the volunteer team will proactively drive scouting for a ghost net to remove. If no ghost net is found, the team will conduct a MDM instead.

When: MDMs will take place from Wednesday from 3-6 pm.

Where: BOW’s patrol area begins in Waimanalo and extends North along Oʻahu’s Windward (East) side until Haleiwa.

Who: All active duty military personnel, military veterans, and local community members are welcomed to attend BOW’s cleanups. Operation Ghost Net will be limited to 6 participants per event.

Supplies: Volunteers will use gloves, serrated knives, and reciprocating saws. All participants should bring a reusable water bottle and wear sunscreen to all BOW events.
